Federation of Genealogical Societies Board Appointments

April 22, 2011 – Austin, TX. The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announces that Thomas MacEntee and Randy Whited have recently been appointed to its Board of Directors.
MacEntee will fill the unexpired term as Director (2013) recently held by Bobbi King who has resigned from the FGS Board. In addition, Randy Whited will complete MacEntee’s unexpired term as Director by Presidential Appointment (2011). King recently resigned from the Board of Directors in order to address other priorities. Her hard work and eagerness to help will be missed, but FGS looks forward to King remaining an important part of the organization as a non-board member.

Thomas MacEntee is a professional genealogist well-known for his focus on social media and technology. The founder of the GeneaBloggers.com website, MacEntee has been at the forefront of several new initiatives in the genealogy community including the use of virtual presentations/webinars to deliver genealogy-related educational content and Internet-based radio to reach out to new audiences interested in family history.
Randy Whited
Randy W. Whited, an avid genealogist for over 25 years, is an active member of several Texas genealogical organizations. As a member of the Austin Genealogical Society since 2005, Randy has been involved with the Society by teaching beginner’s classes, leading monthly and special programs and is currently serving a second term on its Board of Directors. Randy is in his fourth year as Editor of the AGS Quarterly, for which he has twice been honored by the Texas State Genealogical Society. Randy is also serving as 2nd Vice President of the Williamson County Genealogical Society and is frequently a speaker there. A lifelong Texan, Randy is an alumnus of the University of Texas, having graduated with a BA in Astronomy. He resides in Pflugerville, Texas with his wife and twin daughters.

Curt is the project lead on the library’s digitization initiatives--initiatives that include partnerships with the Internet Archive, ProQuest, Footnote, and WeRelate as well as growing a site of free, searchable data files at GenealogyCenter.org. He is a former president of both the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, and the founding president of the Indiana Genealogical Society.
Curt was distinguished in 1995 as a fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (FUGA) and received the Federation of Genealogical Societies' Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern Humanitarian Award, in 1997. Curt was recognized in 2006 by being named the first fellow of the Indiana Genealogical Society. He was honored in May of 2007 with the National Genealogical Society’s P. William Filby award for outstanding, life-time contributions to genealogical librarianship.

Each year at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference, awards are given to genealogical societies and members of societies for outstanding or notable service to the genealogical community. This year awards will be presented at the Keynote Session on Thursday morning. These and some other awards are also announced in the FGS FORUM.
You are encouraged to nominate individuals or societies to receive these awards of recognition. You know the societies and the people who make up those organizations. You know the activities/projects that an individual or society has successfully undertaken. These are the people, the societies, and the activities FGS is looking to offer gratitude to with these awards. Note: only FGS-member societies and individual members of FGS-member societies can be nominated for the FGS Awards.
The deadline for submission of awards for 2011 is 1 June 2011.

iArchives Announces Collaboration With the Federation of Genealogical Societies to Digitize 7.2 Million Pages of Pension Applications From the War of 1812

LINDON, UT -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/12/11 -- iArchives today announced a collaboration with the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) to digitize 180,000 pension applications, or an estimated 7.2 million pages of War of 1812 Pension Applications and Bounty Land Warrants. The collection will be available on iArchives' military records website, Footnote.com, home of more than 72 million historical records.
The multi-year project will consist of scanning the pension files at the National Archives in Washington D.C. and creating a searchable index to the digital images. FGS has targeted the War of 1812 Pension Applications as a high priority project based on the value of the content for genealogists as well as the importance of preserving the fragile records.
"Our goal with any collaboration is to honor our nation's heritage by preserving the records of our past," said Patricia Oxley, President of FGS. "In the specific case of the War of 1812 pension records, there is an added priority due to their frail state where not acting may mean sacrificing these for future generations."
With the burden of proof on the applicant to qualify for a pension, those applying proved participation in the war by including dozens of vividly descriptive pages. Details recorded include military battle stories, service dates, mentions of fellow soldiers, family relations, marriages, widows' maiden names and many other clues significant to researchers. The breadth of information allows the pension files to tell the richest story of that time period.
"The most popular database on Footnote.com today is the Revolutionary War Pensions which is very similar content," said Brian Hansen, General Manager at Footnote.com. "Our users have been asking for the War of 1812 pension records for some time, and I expect this collection to be very popular based on the rich war time detail it contains. We are pleased to make these records available for free on Footnote.com as a result of FGS fundraising efforts to subsidize the production cost."

Saturday Night Banquet. You may have heard about the fiery presentation that Curt Witcher gave at the recent RootsTech Conference in Salt Lake. That presentation made him one of the hottest speakers going, and we have him! Saturday night's banquet will feature Curt B. Witcher, MLS, FUGA, FIGS - "The High Tech and High Touch of 21st Century Genealogy" -- A look at how technology has changed the face of genealogy, and how we can use to do better research and make our societies more successful. Learn how these changes will affect the way that we will be researching in the future. This is one presentation that every genealogist and every society leader should see. The banquet is open to attendees as well as those who are not attending Jamboree. Preregistration is required.
Have an in-person presence at Jamboree for FREE. Issue: We know that no matter how much your society wants to have a table at Jamboree, it is sometimes difficult to pay the table fee and get volunteers to commit to staff the exhibit booth throughout the long Jamboree weekend. Solution: At Jamboree's new feature, Society Row, your society can have a 6' table in the Convention Center main foyer for one day at no cost. You can distribute literature, sign up new members, and, as long as you have a California sales tax permit, can even sell publications.

Jamboree will have four tables available June 10th, 11th, and 12th. A society can have one free table on their choice of days (Thurs., Fri. or Sat.) Electricity and internet costs are set by the Marriott and are not covered by this offer. Tables must be staffed throughout the day, according to these hours:
Friday: 12noon to 6pm (set up at 11am)
Saturday: 8am to 6pm (set up at 7am)
Sunday: 8am to 3pm (set up at 7am)
Society Row volunteers will not be required to purchase a registration to Jamboree unless they wish to attend class sessions. Societies must contact Leo Myers at leo.myers44@gmail.com to reserve a table. Tables will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Make Jamboree a Group Event for Your Society
Have you thought about putting together a bus trip or group activity for your organization's members? We'll work with you to help organize the trip. If your society is at least 100 miles from Burbank, we'll give you one basic registration for free for every 10 people in your group. The San Diego Genealogical Society has organized such an event for the past few years. They take the Coastliner train to and from San Diego and they have a great time. Three highly respected speakers will deliver these outstanding presentations:
George G. Morgan: "The Shape of the 21st Genealogical Society." Genealogical societies must adopt new strategies and modern technologies and adapt to today's trends, to attract new members, and to grow and expand. This session will describe and illustrate how modern societies have evolved and implemented new ideas to grow and succeed.
Cath Madden Trindle, CG: "But It's My Family! Copyright Issues for Genealogists." Whether writing or collecting a family history, editing a family or society newsletter, this session offers a discussion of current US copyright law, International copyright, pending legislation, fair use, court actions and ethical issues of copying and sharing genealogical information electronically or in print.
