2014 Membership Dues Reminder

This is a friendly reminder that the dues for your organization’s 2014 membership in the Federation of Genealogists are due by January 1, 2014. Membership is open to genealogical societies, historical societies, family associations, libraries and archives, educational institutions, and genealogical vendors. We don’t accept individual memberships. You can learn all about the wide range of membership benefits and the dues rates at http://www.fgs.org/cpage.php?pt=65.

Please check with your organization’s treasurer and officers to make sure they’ve already paid the 2014 dues. New memberships are welcome too! If the 2014 dues haven’t yet been paid, FGS offers two ways of payment. We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards through our secure website. We also accept checks. Both of these options are available at http://www.fgs.org/cpage.php?pt=65.

FGS provides an excellent set of membership benefits, including access to money saving partner benefits, online publicity for your society in Society Hall and in the FGS Calendar of Events, free reviews of your society’s bylaws, newsletter, and website, a wiki filled with great advice for growing and strengthening your society, and much more. FGS Call for Volunteers - Great Opportunities Available

Ready for your next adventure involving genealogy and family history? Looking for ways to get more involved with the genealogy community? Put your current skills to use and develop new skills by joining the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) management team.

A national genealogy society doesn’t run itself nor can it provide a meaningful membership experience without the help of its volunteers. FGS is currently looking for individuals to assist with upcoming projects and activities; these run the gamut from managing national conferences and events to providing benefits to FGS member-societies. FGS delivers key resources to genealogical societies within the United States and we need your help to make this happen.

A variety of skill sets are needed, including:

• Preserve the Pensions: Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas to help spread the word about preserving the pensions of the soldiers from the War of 1812. Skills needed include writing articles for publications and blogs, contacting societies, suggestions for advertising, using social media, and promoting the project.

• Outreach: Work to form partnerships and relationships with people and organizations outside of the family history community; build community ties to local history and genealogical societies (e.g., librarians, archivists, historians, etc.).

• Education: Assist in producing and planning the FGS My Society radio show; help manage the FGS Wiki, webinars, and other online educational platforms.

• Membership: Interact with FGS members to help create and implement membership benefits; work with current and help develop new membership acquisition and renewal plans.

• Administration and Office: Assist with general FGS operations on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis including managing e-mails, website management, and other key roles.

E-mail volunteers@fgs.org and provide your contact information, a brief bio and list of skills, and please identify which volunteer opportunities you feel are best suited to your skills.

Office Assistant-Part Time (Round Rock, Greater Austin area)

The Federation of Genealogical Societies, a non-profit organization, is looking for office support in the greater Austin area. FGS is looking for self-motivated professional with great work ethic for a support staff position. This position is an independent contract position beginning 1 January 2014. While workload will shift from month to month, it is estimated that the contract will require 5-7 hours a week with heavier workloads during January, February, June, July, August and November.

Duties to include:

• Handling society mail- collect, open, sort, scan and forward appropriately
• Making bank deposits
• Updating excel files
• Answering phones (limited)
• Sending and answering e-mail
• Other projects as directed

Requirements:

• Ability to follow directions and attention to detail
• MS office software (Word, Excel and outlook)
• Reliable, honest, trustworthy
• Home internet access

Federation of Genealogical Societies Announces 2015 Conference

FGS and RootsTech Events To Be Held In Tandem

February 12-14, 2015 in Salt Lake City

22 August 2013 – Austin, TX. The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announced today that its 2015 National Conference will be held February 12-14, 2015, in Salt Lake City, Utah in conjunction with RootsTech, hosted by FamilySearch. RootsTech is held each February in Salt Lake City and helps thousands of attendees from around the world discover and share family connections, stories, and history.

With the Salt Palace Convention Center as the common venue, both FamilySearch and FGS are committed to producing a one-of-a-kind genealogy event addressing the educational needs of the family history, technology and genealogical society communities. As the logistics of this sizeable event are still being worked out, both FGS and FamilySearch will work together to share resources and provide cost benefits for all parties, including attendees and exhibitors. Attendees can expect to see familiar elements of previous FGS and RootsTech events including keynote presentations, a Society Showcase and Expo Hall.

Registration for both events will begin in August 2014, six months prior to the February 2015 dates. FGS will also hold a smaller national event for its members in late 2015, with details to be announced at a later date.

A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than twenty-eight years, he specializes in the records of the National Archives, especially those that relate to the military. FGS Announces New Board Appointments

Kirk Woosley Patton and McKelden Smith Named Directors

19 July 2013 – Austin, TX. The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announces the recent appointment of Kirk Woosley Patton and McKelden Smith to its Board of Directors.

• Kirk Woosley Patton of Fincastle Ancestry Research is a Kentucky native, born and reared in the horse farm country of the state’s central region. He is descended from at least seven generations of Kentuckians, who migrated to the Bluegrass State in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. Kirk is an attorney, having graduated from the University Of Kentucky College Of Law in 1993. Prior to law school, he earned his bachelor’s degree studying Kentucky and early United States history and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa for his undergraduate work. Kirk practiced law in his native state for eighteen years before moving to Colorado in 2011, at which time he combined his love for history and the law to become a professional genealogist. Kirk currently is chair of the FGS Bylaws Committee and is president of the Castle Rock Colorado Genealogical Society. He is an active member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and its chapters in Kentucky and Colorado. Kirk is also a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors.

• McKelden Smith became president of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in 2009. He is a director of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of New York; a trustee of Boscobel Restoration, Inc. in Garrison, New York; a director of the New Canaan (CT) Preservation Alliance; and founding member of the New Canaan Shred Dogs. McKelden is the author of Great Estates of the Hudson River Valley (1998), Matisse & Chagall at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills (1999) and the forthcoming William & Sarah McKelden, Immigrants from County Monaghan, Ireland and Five Generations of their Descendants. McKelden has a BA from Williams College and an MBA from Columbia University. His business background includes advertising, marketing, and museum management.

“Journey through Generations” – A Conference for the Nation’s Genealogists

ISFHWE 2012 Excellence-in-Writing Competition Deadline June 15, 2013

The International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE) is reminding writers IN ALL MEDIA (magazines, newspapers, journals, websites, blogs) that the 2012 Excellence-in-Writing Competition is still open for entries through 15 June 2013.

The competition is open to both MEMBERS and NON-MEMBERS of ISFHWE; both published and non-published authors may enter (see category list below). The Genealogy Newsletters category is returning to the competition this year. Members of ISFHWE receive a discount on the entry fee (after logging in to the ISFHWE members’ corner).

The categories are:

Category I – Columns. This is for columns of original content, published on a regular basis, in any medium, published in 2012. Entries
should consist of two columns, each submitted as a single file, and must be shorter than 2,000 words. These are entries from the author’s regular column-not features. Note that these may be print or online columns.

Category II -- Articles. These one-time articles (not part of the author’s column) must have been published in 2012 in a journal, magazine, newsletter, blog or website. Entries cannot exceed 5,000 words. Note that these may be print or online articles.

Category III –Genealogy Newsletter. This category is for society or family association newsletters published in 2012. Entries should consist of two issues, each submitted as a single file in PDF format. The judging will be based on originality, content, visual appeal, writing and editing quality, and accuracy.The
award is to the editor of the publication. These may also be print or online newsletters.

Category IV –Unpublished Authors. Entrants in this category aspire to be published writers or columnists in the field of genealogy, family or local history. The submissions in this category are original and unpublished, between 500 and 2,000 words. Since these are UNPUBLISHED, blogs are not eligible for this category.

Category V–Unpublished material by Published Authors. This category is for original unpublished genealogically related articles by previously published authors. Entries should be between 500 and 3,000 words. Since these are UNPUBLISHED, blogs are not eligible for this category.

Winners in each category will be awarded a cash prize and a certificate. The awards presentation will take place during the FGS Conference in Fort Wayne, Indiana, 21-24 August 2013. (Those unable to attend will receive their awards by mail after the conference.)

FGS Partners with German Association of Genealogical Associations

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) announces a new partnership with Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft genealogischer Verbände e. V. (DAGV), an umbrella organization of genealogical and heraldic associations in Germany, in order to further the exchange of ideas and information between genealogists and family historians across the globe.

Originally announced during the recent RootsTech 2013 conference in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, March 23, 2013, FGS and DAGV will work to “develop technical solutions to preserve and present records and to increase the mutual contact” between both societies and their members.

DAGV, founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1949 and based in Stuttgart, represents 63 member associations in Germany with a total of 20,000 individual members among the organizations. Combined with the over 500 member associations and 500,000 individuals represented by FGS, both organizations intend to work closely together within the world umbrella organization of the Confédération Internationale de Généalogie et d'Héraldique (CIGH).

A prevailing goal of this new alliance between FGS and DAGV is for a World Conference to be held in the near future to further the public’s interest in genealogy. Both organizations will focus on strengthening the world organization in order to build bridges for generations to come and setting the world family history research agenda for the 21st century.

Dirk Weissleder, DAGV National Chairman stated “ I personally want to ensure strong co-operation between our two umbrella organizations in the US and Germany. In order to support genealogical research at this level, we must leverage our personal contacts in sharing information and experiences. A key initiative will be to get younger people interested in genealogy through the use of the Internet as well as the structures of our genealogical societies.”
