Joyce Homan is the Associate Director of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and a Masters of Library and Information Science candidate at Drexel University. She is the former president of the student chapter of the Special Libraries Association, and a member of the National Genealogical Society, the American Libraries Association, and the Carpatho-Rusyn Society.





Shamele Jordon

Shamele Jordon is a researcher, lecturer, and podcaster. Her biographical highlights include researcher for the PBS series Oprah’s Roots: An African American Lives Special and African American Lives II; former president of the African American Genealogy Group in Philadelphia, Pa, lecturer at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Birmingham, AL, and board member of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania.

Lisa Alzo

Lisa A. Alzo is a freelance writer, instructor, and lecturer with over 20 years' experience in the field of genealogy. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, and is the author of nine books, including: Finding Your Slovak Ancestors, Writing Your Family History Book, and the award-winning Three Slovak Women. Lisa has written hundreds of articles and her work has appeared in Family Tree Magazine, Family Chronicle, Internet Genealogy, APG Quarterly, among others. Society Spotlight

This week's Society Spotlight features the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center.

The Swenson Center is at Augustana College and is a national archives and research institute providing resources for the study of Swedish immigration to North America, the communities the immigrants established, and the role the immigrants and their descendants have played in American life. This is achieved by promoting and initiating academic research in the field and by collecting and cataloging Swedish-American archival and library materials. Another major role for the Center is to assist people researching their Swedish-American genealogy.

She helped to launch Archives.com and continues to hold a central role there as a Product Manager driving key product enhancements and public relations for the site. She is also the manager of the Archives.com Grant Program, which has already awarded $6,000 dollars to fund family history and historical preservation projects in 2011. Julie is a Santa Clara University graduate, and has experience volunteering internationally with non-profit organizations.

Laura Prescott

Laura G. Prescott is a professional researcher, writer, and speaker. She graduated with a B.A. in History from Dartmouth College in 1980, ultimately applying her degree a decade later to pursue a latent passion for genealogy. Originally from Charleston, West Virginia, she has lived in New England for over thirty-five years. She worked for the New England Historic Genealogical Society for seven years before starting her own research business in 2005. Her company, Laura Prescott Research Services, LLC, promotes the highest standards in genealogical education and research.

Laura is the president of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a consultant at Footnote.com, and genealogist for the Nickerson Family Association. She speaks at regional, national, and international conferences, and writes on a variety of genealogical and historical topics, including the use of manuscripts in genealogical research, genealogy on the Internet, genealogy for Mac users, and weaving history into genealogy. Her work has appeared in Ancestry, NGS NewsMagazine, Digital Genealogist, and New England Ancestors.

Society Spotlight

This week's Society Spotlight will feature the Computer-Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI) (http://caggni.shuttlepod.org).

CAGGNI (The Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois) is a group of amateur genealogists who are committed to using technology and the internet more effectively in support of their research activities.
Monthly meeting topics cover a broad range of subjects of interest in supporting genealogical activities including software, tools, techniques and methodologies. Additionally, monthly newsletters, support for both computer and genealogy issues and Internet surname exposure are among the benefits of membership.

A variety of genealogy software packages are used by the membership. Popular software includes Family Tree Maker (FTM), Ancestry.com public member trees, Genii, Reunion, Personal Ancestral File (PAF), and The Master Genealogist (TMG). We are also interested in personal websites, digital photography, handheld apps, and other ways to share our family histories.

D. Joshua Taylor “Josh” is a nationally known and recognized genealogical author, lecturer, and researcher. Currently, Joshua is the Director of Education and Programs at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a frequent speaker at genealogical societies, libraries, and other organizations across the United States. Active in the genealogical community, Joshua is the current Vice President of Administration for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), where he also serves as chairman of the Conference Planning Committee and co-chair of the FGS/ISGS 2011 National Conference. He holds an MLS (Archival Management) and an MA (History) from Simmons College and has been a featured genealogist on NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? with actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashley Judd.

Paula Stuart-Warren, CG

Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, is a Certified Genealogist working full-time in genealogical and historical research, lecturing, consulting, and writing. Her expertise is widely known and respected. Her lectures are informative, educational, and lively. Each lecture is accompanied by an extensive handout with both online and offline resources. Paula has researched at the National Archives, Family History Library, Minnesota Historical Society, Wisconsin Historical Society, and many other repositories across the U.S. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, lectured at National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences since 1993, and in 29 states and Canada for many types of groups.

A former officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists and former board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, she is a member and volunteer in historical and genealogical organizations. Currently she is President of the Northland Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and co-chair of the 2011 FGS Conference being held in Springfield, Illinois.

She has written for Ancestry Magazine, FGS Forum, NGS Magazine, New England Ancestors, Minnesota Genealogist, and is editor of FGS Conference News Blog and Paula’s Genealogical Eclectica. Her articles and lectures focus on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, analyzing records, Midwest, and Native Americans. She is descended from eight ancestral countries and has connections to many U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

FGS 2011 Speaker of the Week

We start a new feature this week highlighting a different speaker from the FGS 2011 Conference.  Between now and the start of the conference, look for a special appearance by a speaker during which time they'll discuss their presentations at the FGS 2011 Conference.

J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA

Mark Lowe is a full-time professional genealogist, author and lecturer. While sharing personal experiences that help beginning and experienced researchers gain new skills and insights for research, he specializes in Kentucky and Tennessee resources and researches primarily in original records and manuscripts throughout the Southeast. As a national and regional speaker, he has brought these areas of expertise along with his unique humor and southern style to many diverse audiences.

Lowe has published articles in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly (APGQ), the Genealogical Speakers’ Guild SPEAK!, The Longhunter (So. Ky. Genealogical Society), The Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society Quarterly and other local society publications. His own publications include Robertson County Tennessee Marriage Book 2 1859-1873. He formerly was the Vice President of Development for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), Vice President of the Genealogical Speakers Guild (GSG) and Past-President of the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society.

Society Spotlight

This week's Society Spotlight will feature the St. Clair County (IL) Genealogical Society (http://www.stclair-ilgs.org/stchome.htm).  St. Clair was the first county in Illinois and first county created in the Northwest Territory. SCCGS has been pelping genealogists discover their roots since 1977 and was founded in order to:
  • Preserve and perpetuate ancestral records for educational and historical purposes;
  • Encourage the study of family history and to teach the methods of genealogical research;
  • Promote genealogical publications;
  • Promote the preservation and safeguarding of genealogical data; and
  • Publish and circulate literature relative to the purposes and acquisitions of the Society.
